The latest addition to the fall fine arts calendar is Duo Azul, a piano duo concert that will take center stage in in the Alkek Fine Arts Center tomorrow night, Friday, Sept. 26. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m., and admission is free.

Featuring WC artist in residence Hyeyoung Song along with Amy Gustafson, the duo’s performance will include music from American, Spanish, French and Russian composers.
The pair met in Austin while completing their doctoral degrees at the University of Austin and founded their musical duo in 2009 out of a deep friendship and a mutual love for the four-hands, two-piano repertoire.

Song is a prize-winning pianist who has performed extensively throughout the United States and Korea. Her most recent performances include recitals at Steinway Hall, the Tenri Cultural Institute, LBJ Fine Arts Auditorium, First State Bank Performing Art Center, Margo Jones Performance Hall, Caldwell-Carvey Hall, 3.15 National Performing Arts Center and the Alkek Fine Arts Center.

While she has performed at much larger venues, Song said she enjoys the intimacy of the Alkek, especially when her current and former students attend her performances.

“The Alkek is my home, and audiences here are my family,” Song said. “It is much more personal, intimate and more thrilling at the same time. As a performer, it’s a wonderful feeling to communicate with an audience whom I love.”

Song has been also invited to present recitals and master classes in many universities and music festivals such as Texas Women’s University, Central Texas College and Southwestern University.

Gustafson has performed around the United States, eastern and western Europe and Asia and has also won numerous awards. Her recent performances include two tours in China, a 10-recital tour in the southern U.S., solo recitals in Spain, a solo recital at Trinity Church Wall Street’s Concerts at One, as well as solo recitals at Weill Recital Hall, Steinway Hall, the Tenri Cultural Institute, CAMI Hall and the Kosciuszko Foundation. Her major teachers include Julian Martin, Andre-Michel Schub, Miyoko Lotto and Constance Keene.
